More Shade for Tel Aviv Sports Courts as ₪3.8 Million Solar Canopy Order Advances

Sports courts in Tel Aviv-Yafo are set to gain canopies that provide shade while generating electricity. Solarpaint, a subsidiary of Apollo Power, has received an order from Colmobil Energy to design, supply and install the structures for approximately ₪3.8 million before VAT. Completion is planned during 2027, subject to building permits and grid connection approvals.
The order was received on October 21 and made public the following day. For people using the courts, the practical benefit would be shade over an existing place to play. For the city, the same overhead surface can also produce energy.
One space, two uses
Apollo Power’s announcement, published by Funder, says the systems will use the company’s lightweight, flexible solar sheets. The company describes installation on light structures and cable networks, reducing the need for a substantial steel framework.
The combination is the point of the project: the court remains a court, while the space above it takes on another function. It adds a surface for solar generation within the built environment without requiring a separate plot for an energy installation.
A phased project, with approvals still required
Design, supply and installation are expected to proceed in stages, with payment tied to milestones. The 2027 target is a planned completion window, rather than an announcement that the new structures are finished or available for use.
Reporting on the order notes that delivery depends on the necessary approvals and on meeting its terms. The announcement therefore does not establish that construction has begun at every intended site.
The next detail residents need: locations
The reports reviewed do not list the number of courts, their addresses or a construction date for each site. They also do not provide an overall generation capacity or quantified savings.
A location list will make the project more tangible for residents, showing which neighborhood courts are included and when the additional shade is expected. For now, the order marks a concrete step toward combining everyday urban sport with shade and renewable energy.
